Review: Brunch at LUXBAR Chicago

We were in Chicago over the weekend celebrating the S.O.’s 30th birthday, and I got to thinking… what better way to kick off his special day than with a killer brunch? 

Because after all, is there anything better than a great vaycay brunch? I don’t think so!

It was SO hard to choose! Everything looked delicious.

Now with so many delicious restaurants in Chitown, I knew I had to get some advice from a fellow foodie to narrow down the options — which is how we ended up at LUXBAR.

LUXBAR is a quintessential neighborhood bar from Gibsons Restaurant Group (the same group behind famed Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse). The spot has been serving handcrafted cocktails and food sourced from local farmers since 2005.

Here’s our experience at this Chicago hot spot.

The Food

If breakfast is the most important meal of the day, I’d like to argue brunch is the most important meal of the weekend — and LUXBAR certainly delivers with delicious food. The menu was packed with fresh, delicious options, from avocado toast to omelets and benedicts.

The S.O. went all out with a true brunch staple: french toast. Have you ever seen breakfast look so beautiful?!

From the few bites I stole, I found the dish to be surprisingly balanced. With the syrup, whipped cream, powdered sugar, and berries, I figured it would be a sugar bomb. Not so! It was sweet, but more in a savory way. He loved it, and I was jealous —typically a good sign!

I was feeling thoroughly carbed up thanks to Chicago’s to-die-for, deep-dish pizza, so I opted for something a little less indulgent: mezcal cured salmon, with the traditional accompaniments and an everything bagel.

It tasted just as pretty as it looked. The mezcal gave the salmon a unique, smoky taste, which was perfectly balanced by the cream cheese and everything bagel. I also had tons of options for building the ultimate bagel and lox, which I took full advantage of. I was left feeling full, but not unhealthy — which was a win for a weekend of eating nonstop!

The Service

Given it was 10:30 AM on a Saturday, LUXBAR was pretty packed out. Surprisingly, this didn’t affect the service at all. We were

seated about 5 minutes after arriving and even scored an awesome patio table!

Our server was incredibly friendly. He was attentive and quick to speak to us after we were seated. The food came out in a timely manner, and although there was a mishap with one order that took a bit long to fix, he caught it immediately and saw to it that it was fixed. Given it was peak brunch hour, I didn’t mind. These things happen! All was resolved and we ended up having a great brunch anyways.

Wayward Tip: If you are stopping in to LUXBAR during the summer, I’d definitely recommend sitting outside. The weather was beautiful and the restaurant is in a happening area, which made people watching so fun!

The Vibe

Is it even a brunch review if we don’t talk about the vibe?

As the name would suggest, LUXBAR has a killer brunch vibe. It’s geared toward that lux crowd (we saw mostly Millennials in their mid-20s-30s), but not in an overly stereotypical way. This Gold Coast hot spot strikes the perfect combination of trendy and classic. 

If you’re looking for someplace that’s quiet and quaint, LUXBAR isn’t for you. The energy was upbeat, fast, but with a touch of that #weekendchillmode, too. It’s a great place to sip some coffee, maybe drink a mimosa (or two), and keep the weekend party going!
